Excellent companion to your study of the D&C this year. Only $3.45 at my local Deseret Book, what a deal! This paperback, 341 page book contains fascinating backstories about all the people and events connected to every revelation ever given to Joseph Smith while he lived on earth. I enjoyed learning more about these famous figures in church history.If anyone is looking for a good post-Work and the Glory historical fiction series, I recommend Gallacher and Robinson's "A Banner is Unfurled" based on a real family, the Johnsons, who knew Joseph Smith and were personally involved in many events and, yes, I was thrilled to find these same people I'd read about in that series included here, in this nonfiction book.It would've been nice if each chapter correlated to its responding section in the D&C but the authors' decision to assign people or the events going on when each revelation was given makes sense. Some chapters include many sections from this book of scripture while others only relate to one specific revelation. The main point to take away is that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. Even the last few chapters explaining the backstories behind Manifesto 1 and 2, the revelation given to Brigham Young (section 136) and remembering the martyrdom (section 135) are what make this slim volume worth reading and studying. A must have for every home library.
