About the Author

Lois Pryce is a British travel author, freelance journalist, speaker and presenter. She is also a cofounder/curator of the Adventure Travel Film Festival. Torn between the career paths of two illustrious relatives, Max Born, the Nobel Prize Winner in Physics and his granddaughter, Olivia Newton-John, Lois abandoned her interest in Quantum Theory and at the age of sixteen left school and spent the next couple of years as a carrot-picker, painter & decorator and failing an audition as a kiss-o-gram before finding her home in rock 'n' roll. After various jobs in record shops and record labels she ended up as a product manager for the BBC. But by 2003, Lois had grown weary of the daily grind in jargon-infested London media-land, so she jacked in her job at the Beeb to ride 20,000 miles from Alaska to the tip of South America astride her 225cc Yamaha trail bike. Upon her return she wrote the book of this trip, Lois on the Loose, which was published in the USA and the UK and translated into several languages. Itchy wheels struck again and it wasn't long before she was plotting another adventure. In October 2006 she set off once more, this time to ride the length of Africa from London to Cape Town, crossing the Sahara through Algeria and Niger and continuing down the west coast through the Congo and Angola to South Africa. Four months and ten thousand miles later she rolled into Cape Town just about in one piece, having tackled Kalashnikov-wielding soldiers and Angolan minefields along the way. Her book of this awesome adventure, Red Tape & White Knuckles was published in 2008. Since returning from Africa she has written and presented 'Ladies on the Loose', a DVD guide to worldwide motorcycle travel from the female perspective, featuring an impressive cast of women adventure riders from around the globe. She is also a contributing editor to Overland Journal, a columnist for Outrider Journal and a co-founder of The Adventure Travel Film Festival which takes place in the USA and the UK each year. When she's not on the road she lives on a Dutch barge in London with her motorcycle adventurer husband, Austin Vince with whom she has just returned from a coast-to-coast ride across the USA in a Ural sidecar outfit. This book is brilliant. It fits in well with the canon of road books and has a very good sensibility She's funny, competent and a joy to read. If you're stuck somewhere in an office and have your doubts about ever breaking out you should read this- or maybe you shouldn't. There are some good lessons here about how to actually pull of the "hit the road and have an adventure" thing. Small woman, small bike. travel across continents. Yep- trying to imitate Lois Pryce could cause you trouble.She has a nice normal seeming job and she hears he call of the road.If you want to be complacent this could be a very dangerous book.

Did a tour of Mexico back in early '72. My 650 Yamaha was worn out by the time I returned home. The chain looked like boiled spaghetti. One shock was missing off the rear mount. How this adventuresome (and good looking) gal managed from Alasks to the tip of South America is beyond me. A great, entertaining, fast moving and exciting read for anyone interested in motorcycles...with a good looking author to boot! Great job Lois! Loved it!

The book is a beautiful story, and a wonderful beginning. You have to admire the woman. Her big adventure was goal-driven, but not a check-list excursion. You could really see her blossom into a completely different creature by the end of the journey. Nothing like travel to get your priorities straitened out, and to really see what's important to you in the long run. This book makes my life in the "Pigpen" a little more tolerable for having read it. The copy shipped fast and was well worth the investment.

I read this a long time ago but I remember it being fun. A woman rider, especially a solo one, is still quite unique. I believe she talked about her trip to Sturgis one year.

So inspiring and empowering to read about Lois' exploits. Well-written and very readable.

If you like motorcycles or travel this is a sure win. There is no amazing plot or twisting subterfuge but Lois writes easily as if you are hearing the story first-hand instead of reading it in a book. Her humor is excellent and her observations are refreshingly blunt. If you are easily offended then this is not for you as she is far from PC, but for everyone else it's a fantastic journey that leaves you wanting more. Fortunately she's written a second book as well. Now I just have to find a copy of it...

As a motorcyclist, I could easily relate to the incredible obstacles that Lois had to clear in order to complete her mission, a road trip from Alaska to the very tip of South America. The physical hardships, the interaction with Third World authorities, the environmental elements of each mile all contributed to an almost insurmountable list of extremely difficult conditions. But, she did it almost without fear and chronicled the highlights for the reader's enjoyment.Lois is a brave woman. She left a job that barely challenged her to take on one of the greatest challenges of anyone's lifetime. Lois injects her dry British humor throughout with her often "tongue-in-cheek" dialogue of daily events. When she arrived in Alaska, she found that the men seemed to outnumber the women by a large number. Her utlimately take on it was that "the odds were good, but the goods were odd."I would have liked to hear more as she wrapped many months of travel into 200+ pages, BUT I appreciated the fact that she didn't want to bore the reader with minutia.Hats off to a woman who took on a project, fulfilled a dream, and achieved a goal.You do not have to be a motorcyclist to enjoy "Lois on the Loose". You merely have to sit back and read about an exciting oddyssey.

Bought it for my daughter but was so good I ended up reading it!
