I should start by disclosing my bias: I worked with Israel ten years ago, and he was a great co-worker. Sometimes getting to know someone in the public spotlight is a disappointment, but the opposite was true here. The time I spent working with Israel and in his home only increased my respect for him as someone who earnestly seeks to live out what he teaches.Because of my bias, I'm not going to compare this book against books by other authors. What I will do this is compare it to Israel's other books. It's his best to date.It covers two major areas. The first half makes a case for educating from a Biblical Worldview. The second half takes ten major academic areas and discusses specifics of how a Biblical Worldview applies to each area.It is an update to and replacement for his 2000 book Homeschooling from a Biblical Worldview. When he wrote the 2000 book, he was a young man, newly married and a new father. Now he's spent almost two more decades living out these principles (with his wife, Brook) as he raises and trains his children. So his perspectives and insights are more developed and experiential. At 238 pages, counting appendices, this book is an easy read. That's for better and for worse. If one must choose between leaving readers wanting more and leaving readers wanting less, it's certainly better to leave readers wanting more. The first half felt just right. I would love to see what Israel would do with turning the second half into a book of its own, fleshing out each academic area in greater detail. The first half is great for new parents, or parents working through alternative educational options. The second half is excellent for new parents and long-time homeschoolers alike.
Israel Wayne delves into the hot topic of education from a Christian point of view. Is education neutral, as so many believe? Can public schools simply teach a subject, without influencing a student in other areas? The answer is no. With a solid, Biblical background, this book covers the history of public education and the "religion" this institution follows. The second part of the book discusses each subject and how each area of education points back to our creator God. It gave me a renewed sense of purpose as a homeschool mom and reminded me, once again, of why I do what I do.
I just finished reading Education: Does God Have An Opinion by Israel Wayne,. The book is divided up into two parts. The first, he calls "The Apologetic," in which he deals with establishing a truly Biblical philosophy of education. The second part, is what he calls "The Core Subjects," is all about applying a Biblical worldview consistently to all areas of education, from science to history, from mathematics to logic, from philosophy to language arts, and everything in between!God has a lot to say about education in His Word. And by far, "Education: Does God Have An Opinion" is the best book I have read on the subject. Mr Wayne lays it out there Scripturally. His argument is sound and logical, standing on the firm foundation of God's Word. His approach to the core subjects will bring new life to your way of thinking. And his use of Scriptures makes the study exciting. This isn't Wayne's opinion he is writing about, it's God's.The book tackles subjects such as sports, socialization, public schools, academics, and a host of other issues that parents often have questions or concerns about. This is a "must have" for every family library, as well as every church library, and if I had the money to make it happen, I'd buy them myself!
I heard this author on a local radio station and it lead me to consider homeschooling my children. Before this, I never even thought about homeschooling. No way, no how is what I thought. I bought this book, read it, and then bought others on this topic. We have now come to decision that we are going to homeschool. The author makes some excellent points and backs them with great references. My favorite section was the ending where he pointed out all scripture that leads to educating your own children. It makes perfect biblical sense. I highlighted almost everything in the last section. I also liked the section with the parable of the robbers. Point well made!
