In the first half of the book, Kierkegaard, the ‘father of existentialism,’ delves into the mire of human existence to discover that all are in despair. With absolutely no hesitation, Kierkegaard dreadfully sculpts the desperate situation every individual experience. After successfully sculpting what looks and feels like shattered pieces (mentally and emotionally), Kierkegaard presents in the second half “the possibility of offense in Christianity†as the one genuine hope for individuals: the fact you can be offended by God proves that God is the remedy for your despair–your position of sin. The expansive gulf between man and God can only be crossed with “the leap of faith,†only to truly discover that God has already crossed the great divide in Christ. Blessed are those who take no offense at him.Absolutely one of the most frustrating and difficult reads. This is one of Kierkegaard’s most dense works and it is my first of his works. This book probably challenged me intellectually more so than almost any other book that I have read before. It is a difficult read, there is no doubt about that, but it is worth it. Kierkegaard was an excellent writer, and the Hong's translation is extremely readable. This was my introduction to Kierkegaard after many months of wanting to read him, and I found out after purchasing the book that this is actually one of his more challenging works. I've been told there are better places to start with Kierkegaard, but I have no qualms with the fact that this was my starting point for my study of his philosophy.The book is itself incredibly intensive and teasing if the reader lets it become so; it seems to me that it is necessary to take frequent breaks in order to let what one had just read sink in. The main topic of the book is despair and Kierkegaard's description of the different categories of despair. An interesting read, it is nonetheless difficult to handle, especially for a novice student of philosophy such as I. Kierkegaard was nothing short of a genius, and that becomes more and more obvious as one reads through any of his works. If nothing else, The Sickness Unto Death will get one's mind going.
How can you give a theological and philosophical giant's most important work anything but a 5? This book may be the single most important influence on the Christian theological anthropology of the late 20th century. It took that long to become important because it came from a difficult author from a marginal country in opposition to the dominant romantic myth of human powers of mid-19th century Europe. If you plan to read it, expect to read about four or five pages an hour. But it's perspective-shifting, even if (as lots of people do) you strenuously disagree with him.
It doesn't often happen that you can feel reading a book changing your world-view. I can remember the first time I read "Sickness Unto Death" and suddenly commercials sounded different. It's a simple Either/or: either you are part of the problem or you are part of the solution. Either you are moving, and, whether you know it or not we are all moving, in one direction or the other. The opposite of "faith" is not "doubt," for "doubt" can a moment within faith. The opposite of "faith" is "despair." Despair is the "Sickness Unto Death," and there is no other real death. All else is temporary, but despair is eternal. The great dialectian draws out and describes the variety and etiology of despair in a language he describes as "algebraic" (that is, spare, formulaic, a prime example is the famous opening paragraph with its comic parody of Hegel (he's pulling your leg at the same time he is deadly serious. That's SK)). You may find this language hard to deal with, but it is worth it to stick with it.
Based on Kierkegaard's book, it is clear that despair is essential for a person to realize he is not a "self," and thereby turn to God; but many people choose to create a self on their own-they become a carbon copy of everyone else in the world. I was intrigued by Kierkegaard's insights. From what I understood, there are two possibilities a person can have: (1) There is the possibility of becoming the self that God intended for the person, or (2) The alternate possibility when one manufactures a "self" then for the rest of his or her life, strives to attain it. The "fantastic" is the result of one's idea of self that is always being improved and refined from the previous "self." However, a person can only have a self if God gives it to him or her. The "sickness unto death" is when the person does not realize this until he or she faces death and had lived a life in sin (sin was explained as the spiritual and actual position of a person in comparison to God).The person had a chance to live in "actuality," but instead was in despair and now is left with the "sickness unto death." Kierkegaard offered an insight to the human soul that ought to be the foundation to understanding the psyche of the Christian. His work is still relevant, and had probably ushered the Christian psychology movement into existence. It would be safe to say that he is a "founding father" of Christian psychology and was a very observant man. This book is not easy to read, but it is worth the effort.
Kierkegaard is well-known but not widely discussed, due to the depth of his writing. This is a serious book, deeply psychological and religious. The full title gives you a good idea of what it is about. Don't buy for casual or beach reading. You won't get past page 3. A classic, as are all of his works. This is a hard read, due to the intensity of the writer and his topic.Ordered as a bargain, reduced-price, used book. Great price, quick delivery, new condition. I am a happy camper.
