Great outline of the process to topple a democracy and turn it into a socialist state, and we're already there!Hillary Clinton wrote her thesis on Saul Alinsky's 'Rules for Radicals', and Obama is a philosophical supplicant to Saul's theories.Saul Alinsky's 'Rules for Radicals' starts with, believe it or not, setting up national healthcare, increasing the debt, increasing the racial divide, controlling education, and more.Sounds like we're already there with a horrible national debt, Obama care, Ferguson, and Common Core and NGSS, not to mention the hold the government will have on what our community colleges will be told to teach when they foot 75% of the bill for free college for the masses, whether they will succeed or not. It's creating more entitlements!

The book rightfully points out that conservatives find themselves in a fight to the death and need to take off the gloves and start socking. However, he makes two mistakes that make the book less effective than it could be. Imitating the Screwtape Letters, he uses a leftist persona as C.S. Lewis used the devil. The author tries to sustain this device longer than Lewis did with less literary ability. At the same time, he constantly faux-proletarian prose style (e.g., "hoosegow" for "jail." This reader skimmed over the parts couched in this arch language and resumed normal reading when the author reverted to normal prose, thereby eliminating annoying surplusage comprising about one quarter of the book.

Great book !! Do more.

Fantastic book for every single conservative and libertarian on the planet. Liberal DB's need not apply. This piece is spot on exposing the satanic agenda of liberalism and it's primary advance engine called the democrat party. Humorous and in a slight vein of the Screwtape Letters "Kahane" takes us through an exhaustive history of liberalism by way of the ever present evil of Saul Alinsky. I could not put this book down.

Tired of having progresives spit in my face when I want to have a talk with them about our differences. This is helping.

🤩

What I've known for so long to be true is affirmed here in these pages. Progressivism isn't about progress but rather, destruction.

David Kahane lays out the Bible of the left and their reliance on lies and misrepresentations to manipulate the gullible electorate. It shows the left are the direct decendents of the failed philosophy that bankrupted the Soviet Union. The yellow journalism of the American press was even rewarded with twelve of Russia's highest civilian awards to a dozen U.S. journalists for disseminating the left's anti U.S. message. A factual and much needed book.

Art Out of Time: Unknown Comics Visionaries, 1900-1969, by Dan Nadel

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. There are lots of anthologies of the work of the past century's famous cartoonists, but Nadel has done a real service in putting together this collection of 29 marvelous nearly unknown comic strip and comic book artists. Many are reprinted from yellowing newsprint—in a few cases, like Walter Quermann's late-'30s newspaper strip Hickory Hollow Folks, from the only copies of their work still extant. Only a few, like Ogden Whitney's poker-faced '60s comic book Herbie, have ever been reprinted before. Nadel's five categories, "Exercises in Exploration," "Slapstick," "Acts of Drawing," "Words in Pictures" and "Form and Style," sometimes seem arbitrary; the biographical notes at the back are informative but all too brief. Still, it's hard to argue with the comics themselves. Charles Forbell's 1913 newspaper strip Naughty Pete looks like it had a huge influence on Chris Ware; Gustave Verbeek's bonkers formal experiment The Upside-Downs of Little Lady Lovekins and Old Man Muffaroo, from 1904, is still hilarious and sui generis; Rory Hayes's crude but meticulous horror stories from 1969's Bogeyman Comics, the most recent pieces here, were decades ahead of their time. Contemporary cartoonists—and their fans—have a lot to learn from the freewheeling, witty, try-anything-twice artistic attitude of the pieces Nadel's assembled. From Booklist

Most comics, the earliest in particular, haven't been seen since their original newspaper and comic-book publications. In this eye-popping full-color volume, editor Nadel resurrects whole Sunday strips, strip story arcs, and comic-book stories by 29 creators he thinks are too good to be left moldering in archives. He groups his picks under section titles denoting their particular distinctions; for instance, those corralled as "Exercises in Exploration" show their protagonists on the move through locales familiar and exotic. A few creators--Jewish humorists Milt Gross and Harry Hershfeld, influential animated cartoonist Gene Deitch (Mister Magoo, Tom Terrific), cartoonist-turned-TV-writer Jack Mendelsohn (The Carol Burnett Show, Three's Company)----haven't been utterly forgotten, but the outstanding, if not always masterly, quality of the drawing, in particular, in all the selections argues that those who are have been wronged. The book would be the comics-revival event of the year if only it were more oversize than it is, for in the earliest Sunday-page reproductions, the words are near-unreadably tiny. Nadel's prose should have been tidied, too. Ray OlsonCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

It was a great idea to publish some seldom seen comic strips from the past in one nice volume such as this. However, I agree with some of the other people who wrote reviews..You can hardly read the word bubbles in the vintage comics, as the print size is very very small. In any event this book is still very nice, and still a joy to behold.

Yes...it is a great compliation of some of the forgotten Golden Age cartoon work...like the wonderful "Explorigator"...but, and this is a Big BUT...Those great old full-sheet Sunday Comics have been reduced to 8 x 11...can't even read the type-face with a good glass magnifier. And while the art work has some fabulous color it too is reduced to the point of....well you think about it!The good news is the Intro, the Bibliography and the Resources are excellent for your further research.P.S. My "mint" copy will be available on eBay shortly

I bought this book for my husband for Christmas on the recommendation of one of his friends who knows his taste. A comics afficiado from way back, he has been over the moon about the book to the extent that we have given copies to various other of his friends as well. Everyone who has received it RAVES about it ... its coverage, thoroughness, graphics, etc. So no doubt that this book is da bomb! If you're even vaguely interested in the subject area, this is definitely the book for you.

Not sure where the high reviews come from. For the most part these are really bad, off register, prints that are obscure due to their intrinsic lack of value.

great buy

Not all the content was really that interesting to me, but definitely some gems! o o o \ o / o o o l o o o- ○ -o o o l o o o / o o / o o \

This book is an eye-opener. Beautiful quality and reproductions here. Every time I look through this I discover something else. I love the works of McCay and Herriman as much as anyone...but there are real treasures here waiting to be rediscovered. Dan Nadel has done an outstanding job bringing this work to the attention of present day comics afficionados and art lovers in general. I really hope that Dan decides to do a volume 2 of this...and if you own this book, you'd know exactly what I mean.

It's a great book, though some of the reprints are too small and hard on the eyes. For those who like art, comics and poetry it's a must have.

The Orientalist: Solving the Mystery of a Strange and Dangerous Life, by Tom Reiss

From Bookmarks Magazine

Reiss persistently peeled away layers of fact and fiction to recount a remarkable life. He was also lucky: his subject’s elusiveness made ferreting out truth difficult, but Reiss discovered six of Nussimbaum’s notebooks in the possession of his last editor. Critics agree that The Orientalist fascinates from both a biographical and cultural perspective-it’s rich in exotic settings and characters, from an Austrian baroness to a former Hollywood starlet. Despite its charm, the book has some faults. Reiss seems to have included every piece of information he encountered, from historical anecdotes to ornate set pieces. Some factual errors, the book’s brisk pace, and the lack of maps may confuse readers. Still, The Orientalist is excellent look into the reinvention of self during one of history’s most turbulent times.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

Lev Nussimbaum fabricated a life that in its brief arc encompassed the whole of the Western and Near Eastern culture of his time. A Jew from the Caucasus, born in the first throes of the Russian Revolution, he styled himself a Muslim prince. As Kurban Said, he wrote a best-selling novel that made him the toast of Nazi Germany. Inventing and reinventing himself, he left a confused and perplexing trail. Reiss pursues two great narratives, one recounting Nussimbaum's life itself, the other following the author's quest to ferret from among myths and outright lies the truth of this man's life. Along the way, readers absorb much about oil-rich Azerbaijan, the Russian Revolution, the rise of fascism, and the centuries-old clashes of cultures and religions in the Caucasus and Middle East. Digressions abound because of Nussimbaum's intricate, multicultural encounters. In the hands of a less adept writer, such complex history might grow opaque and tedious, but Reiss' storytelling flair and the utterly compelling character of Lev Nussimbaum turn this biography into a page-turner of epic proportion. An absolutely fascinating book. For an outline, I suggest you refer to other reviews. What impressed me so much - history buff I am - is the incredible wealth of historic information, from a vivid description of Baku as perhaps the earliest oil-boomtown in history, through a great many different revolutions in Russia and neighboring countries in the Caucasus (first under the Tsars and later the Mensheviks and Bolsheviks), the Habsburg Empire, Germany, Italy and the Ottoman Empire - in the early twentieth century, during and shortly after the end of WW I and between wars. We get detailed information about the rise of Lenin, Stalin, Attatürk, Hitler, Mussolin,i about the life of the Russian Emigrés in Paris, Prague and Berlin, about life in early Nazi Germany for Germans as well as for Jews (Germans as well as from the Russian-Polish Pale of Settlement). All this is knowledge is imparted in a non-put-downable true but incredible and unbelievably colorful life story of a of Baku-born Jew, son of an Azeri oil magnate father and an early Russian Bolshevik revolutionary mother who, during his lifetime, re-invented himself as a Muslim prince and Orientalist who, having emigrated under incredibly dangerous circumstances, through the Caucasus, via Central Asia, Persia, Constantinople, Paris, New York, North Germany and finally Berlin, became a famous writer who sold his books in many languages including German. Incredibly, as a Jew he became a bestselling author in Nazi Germany. .Through the highs and lows of his life, he wrote famous novels like "Ali and Nino" (never out of print until today!), but also early biographies of Lenin, Stalin and Mussolini. He finally died nearly pennyless in Positano in Nazi-controlled Italy in 1942, miraculously still unharmed from fascist or nazi persecution. A very interesting and enjoyable read.

Tom Reiss's book, "The Orientalist: Solving the Mystery of a Strange and Dangerous Life", is the very strange story of author Lev Nussembaum and his identity, which has been obscured through the 20th century. It is also the story of Tom Reiss's search for that story and is, at times, as much about the "hunter" as the "hunted".Lev Nussembaum was, at various times in his life, a Jew, a Muslim, and a hybrid. It seemed to depend on where he was living at the time and what he wanted to write. Born to Jewish parents in the oil capitol of Baku, he changed identities as often, it seems, as he changed clothing. Certainly the political extingencies of the times - the Russian Revolution, Nazism, Bolshevism - that Lev lived through, called for a somewhat "flexible" identity.Tom Reiss began searching for Lev Nissembaum when he began searching for the author of "Ali and Nino", reputed to be one Kurban Said. Long years of searching and interviewing led to Lev Nissembaum, who had died in 1942. Reis's book is a long, sometimes repetitive, but always interesting look at foreign places and wars and how they led to Lev Nissembaum.

This story opened up a new aspect of Jewish history of wish I was previously unaware. Lev Nussimbaum's involvement in so many of the tumult that took place in Russia and Europe during the years it covers is extraordinary. Sadly, the book also reveals how deeply seated anti-Semitism was everywhere this unusual person went. Bolsheviks blamed the world's ills on Jewish capitalists. Pre-Nazi fascists blamed Bolshevism on the Jews. Capitalists simply turned their backs on Jews. And he felt it all, no matter how hard he tried to reinvent himself.Lev Nussimbaurm is not particularly likable, but I have to respect his intelligence; and I can't imagine how I would have dealt with the challenging circumstances within which he found himself. He is flawed, like all of us. He was bright yet naive. He was hopeful at the wrong times. HIs fears lead him to be blind to the dangers of certain ideologies. My one criticism of the book was that the author could have found a better way to help the reader keep track of some of the many characters who come in and out of Lev's life, and then resurface later.

Lev's entire, albeit brief, life is fascinating and Tom Reiss does a superb job of researching and presenting it. I had long wondered about the "real" author of Ali and Nino since no such person named Kurban Said ever stepped forward to claim authorship. It now seems evident that Lev, a strange and brilliant Jewish Orientalist, deserves the credit. However, while the subject matter is intriguing, Reiss's writing style can be circuitous, his sentences are complex, often with many thoughts linked together in such a way that that it necessitates the patient rereading a sentence or entire paragraph and he frequently refers to people who might not be familiar to Western readers today (e.g., fortunately I learned in a college philosophy course who Martin Buber was). In other words, this is not an easy book to read, even though it is historically accurate and the meat of the story, complete with reproductions of old photographs, is truly riveting. As an aside: There is a very good movie entitled "Baku - The City of Ali and Nino." If you are drawn to this story as much as I am, it would be well worth it to track down this film, which puts the entire novel in its geographical and historical context.

Fascinating! I had to keep Google handy all the way through, as there were so many new names, places, concepts. Not a quick read by any means, but worth it. Lev Nussimbaum - Essad Bey - Kurban Said was a truly intriguing man. A Jew who became Muslim, from Baku, Azarbaijan, and fled various political aggressions, which led to him changing his identity. He came into contact with many famous people who influenced his life, including artists, writers & powerful political figures, & ended up in Nazi Germany as Hitler came to power. It was not an easy read, but I love to learn - and I surely did!

Review

"We strongly recommend this book to anyone involved in a digital transformation for solid guidance about what works, what doesn't work, and what doesn't matter." (Tom & Mary Poppendieck, Authors of the Lean Software Development Series)"A must read! In a sea of books about technology approaches, Accelerate stands out in its clarity and practicality." (Karen Martin, Author, Clarity First and The Outstanding Organization)"Excellent! As well as conclusively showing that DevOps outcomes are faster, cheaper AND safer, this book is an excellent case study for robust survey design and analysis." (Adrian Cockroft)"This is the kind of foresight that CEOs, CFOs, and CIOs desperately need if their company is going to survive in this new software-centric world.Anyone that doesn't read this book will be replaced by someone that has." (Thomas A. Limoncelli, Co-Author of The Practice of Cloud System Administration)“'Here, do this!' The evidence presented in Accelerate is a triumph of research, tenacity and insight, proving not just correlation but a causal link between good technical and management behaviours and business performance. It also exposes the myth of “maturity models” and offers a realistic, actionable alternative. As an independent consultant working at the intersection of people, technology, process, and organisation design this is manna from heaven! As chapter 3 concludes: 'You can act your way to a better culture through implementing these practices in technology organizations'. There is no mystical culture magic, just 24 concrete, specific capabilities that will lead not only to better business results, but more importantly to happier, healthier, more motivated people and an organisation people want to work at. I will be giving copies of this book to all my clients." (Dan North, Independent Technology and Organization consultant)"The 'art' of constructing a building is a well understood engineering practice nowadays. However, in the software world, we have been been looking for patterns and practices that can deliver the same predictable and reliable results whilst minimizing waste and producing the increasingly high performance our businesses demand.Accelerate provides research backed, quantifiable and real world principles to create world class, high performing IT teams enabling amazing business outcomes.Backed by the two leading thought leaders (Kim and Humble) in the DevOps community and world class research from PHD Forsgren, this book is a highly recommended asset!" (Jonathan Fletcher, Group CTO, Hiscox)"In their book Accelerate, Nicole Forsgren, Jez Humble and Gene Kim don't break any new conceptual ground regarding agile, lean and DevOps. Instead, they provide something that might be even more valuable which is a look inside the methodological rigor of their data collection and analysis approach which lead them to their earlier conclusions on the key capabilities that make IT organizations better contributors to the business. This is a book that I will gladly be placing on my bookshelf next to the other great works by the authors." (Cameron Haight, VP & CTO, Americas, VMware)"Accelerate does a fantastic job of explaining not only what changes organizations should make to improve their software delivery performance, but also the why, enabling people at all levels to truly understand how to level up their organizations." (Ryn Daniels, Infrastructure Operations Engineer at Travis CI and author of Effective DevOps)"With this work, the authors have made a significant contribution to the understanding and application of DevOps. They show that when properly understood, DevOps is more than just a fad or a new name for an old concept. Their work illustrates how DevOps can improve the state of the art in organizational design, software development culture, and systems architecture. And beyond merely showing, they advance the DevOps community's qualitative findings with research-based insights that I have heard from no other source." (Baron Schwartz, Founder & CEO of VividCortex and Co-Author of High Performance MySQL)

When I originally posted my review, I said that I would be glad to amend or even delete it based upon my concerns being answered or their being shown to be incorrect. One of the authors, Jez Humble, took the time to respond to me. I still have some lesser concerns but I am satisfied by his response. There was peer review of the research and DORA was not formed until after the research had been submitted for review. Since I was wrong about those points, I have upgraded my rating and have revised my review which starts in the next paragraph.Note that I make no claim to be as skilled when it comes to research as is Forsgren. Hands down, she has an impressive resume and experience which makes me look like what you scrape off the bottom of your shoe in comparison. When I approach this book and the research, I am concerned regarding the use of Snowball research. However, I recognize how hard it is to conduct research in the workplace and the so-called "real world" outside the laboratory. When reading this book, my main point would be to keep in mind what the authors openly say, to their credit, that the research presented does not lead itself to predictive or causal analysis. However, it can be used to draw inferences that those implementing DevOps can find very valuable. Use this book to expand your ideas of how to improve software delivery.

I’ve lived in and consulted for many companies that would benefit from transforming their culture. If you are a leader in a company, and you 1) want to validate perceptions of company performance from the inside, and 2) want to continuously improve, read on.“The most innovative companies and highest-performing organizations are always striving to be better. High performing companies have 46 times more frequent code deployments, 440 times faster lead time from commit to deploy, 170 times faster mean time to recover from downtime, and 5 times lower change failure rate (1/5 as likely for a change to fail).”The reasons for embarking on this DevOps journey of acceleration and transformation are many. Leaders who want to realize this level of performance will get more loyalty and work out of their current people and attract awesome new ones. They will build better, more secure software--and a mature software delivery capability provides a competitive advantage to any business. This book provides evidence and research to back these assertions.Accelerate offers clear and compelling guidance to begin this shift no matter a company’s current level of maturity, covering the spectrum of roles from leaders to doers, from coders to architects to managers. If you are pressed for time, chapters are focused and easy to consider in turn, and provide excellent implementations recommendations.Leaders will be especially inspired by Part 3, a case study about a real Transformation. It all started by the willingness to change.DevOps is a cultural movement that feeds value delivery and growth within an organization. If you are responsible for any aspect of building secure, resilient rapidly evolving distributed systems, buy this book! Read it on your next plane ride and begin your journey of differentiation and transformation with the inspirational and executable guidance it offers.

If Continuous Delivery, DevOps Handbook, and other like books are technical required reading, this book should be managerial required reading. Accelerate highlights the business value for maturing a DevOps capability by covering a new way to measure software delivery. The perspective I obtained from Accelerate is there is a science to identify the right work at the right time to create a smarter SDLC. The point is, it isn't really DevOps, but BizDevSecOps, working in a Generative culture of harmony bliss.

Great practical blend of leading thoughts around how you create and continuously evolve Software Delivery Excellence.Covers the 24 capabilities, the four true measures that align to tempo and stability, and introduces the Westrum model and Continuum.Combines Lean Software Development, Phoenix Project, DevOps Handbook and several concepts from different books around Lean Management and Practices.. marrying culture, DevOps and lean in one.Includes research methods and a data section.. and examples of how to measure stressing this is a journey that can’t be outsourced, and needs to grow within continuously to be competitive and thrive.

This book took me from clueless to convert in three days. The authors leverage their research into a clear presentation of DevOps principles, what works, how it works and why it works. This was a great introduction to the concepts because the fact that it is based on concrete measures keeps it laser focused on the whole point - becoming, being and remaining a high performing software delivery organization. It was inspiring because it never loses sight of the fact that an organization is formed of human beings and that DevOps is about culture - and that is why - and when-- it works.

This book is essential reading for anybody who's writing software and needs to deal with management. For one thing, it finally puts to rest that old chestnut that you loose productivity if you spend time writing tests. Using real studies and actual metrics, it proves once and for all that improving code quality IMPROVES productivity. And that's just in the first chapter! I can't recommend this book too highly.

There have been a number of books that I've looked at and read on DevOps. Some are very technical and some are too lightweight. I think this book perfectly balanced technical aspects with using building blocks to take the reader on a journey of understanding.I highly recommend this book as a book for those who want to become more familiar with DevOps and how it will impact their organizational structure and culture. This book does not get into the technical how to and I think that is perfectly acceptable.
